Ten Things That Everyone Should Know About Race

pauparazzi:

  1. Race is a modern idea
  2. Race has no genetic base
  3. Human subspecies don’t exist
  4. Skin color really is only skin deep
  5. Most variation can be within, not between, “races”
  6. Slavery predates race
  7. Race and freedom were born together
  8. Race justified social inequalities as natural
  9. Race isn’t biological, but racism is still real
  10. Colorblindness will not end racism

Ten important things to remember about race, taken from the material taught by my sociology teacher at FPF, Sanghamitra Niyogi.

THE SCAR PROJECT: Breast Cancer is not a Pink Ribbon

http://www.thescarproject.org/

A series of large-scale portraits of young breast cancer survivors shot by fashion photographer David Jay. Primarily an awareness raising campaign, The SCAR Project puts a raw, unflinching face on early onset breast cancer while paying tribute to the courage and spirit of so many brave young [people].

Up until tonight I never knew exactly what breast cancer survivors looked like after surgery. These courageous [people] inspire, move and tastefully challenge our notions of beauty. How is it that cancer can reak such havoc on their bodies, yet they are still so unspeakably gorgeous?

- Kate

Looking at these photos, I can’t imagine anyone trying to justify “Save the Boobies” merchandise. It is not about the boobies. It is about all these people.

I have always been a huge supporter of the scar project for pointing out how slacktivist the whole deal is with the pink ribbons and the pink tennis balls and the pink cookies. and nothing pisses me off more than the “save the boobies” etc. garbage and I can’t understand why more people don’t find the sexualization of breast cancer “awareness” more obscene.

breast cancer survivors are exceptionally strong people, and the scar project really helps hit that point home.

There is only so much

when eggshells and emotions are so much

similar than you care for. Thank you for being

no thank you at all I don’t mind it when you juggle

because I am not as fragile.

But don’t play with ones not my own,

you weak weak woman(girl).

Take care to realize that my scorn is justified and burns

slowly like strong liquor, except unlike whiskey

you have not seen its repercussions.

I am sorry that you have so many fissures in your mind and no plaster can

fill in the shameful cracks. But we have tried, and you have known, and you have not

let it cure enough.

So we may part, like land, like islands

and I hope that maybe one day

well, maybe

you will return from the churning sea.
